Sean Moffitt is in the tent with us. He loved our tent. This was big for us. Sean is a great marketing fellow and his kind words made our hearts glad. Breaking barriers with some fun.

Sean is the founder and chief evangelist of Agent Wildfire. Co-author of Wiki-Brands. Great read. We talked about the cover of the book and why it was important to Sean. The book is one I think all business folks need to read. Why should we use social media… Sean talks about it. He has a terrific sense of humour.

How do you put you Social Pants on in the morning? What is your strategy for Twitter, Facebook and blogging. Wise-one have a plan.

Sean also tells us that Social Media is a dirty word. Gasp! Interesting to hear about his viewpoint. He gives loads of information!!!

It was the longest interview we did at SMCV11. It was a chat that had a life of its own. We probably could have spent another hour talking to Sean.

Big thrill for Kim. She got to me Rebecca Coleman in person! She is a supporter of the arts, is a great marketing person and an marketing educator.

We learn more about her interests, business etc.

It’s only been about 3 years that she has been doing blogging, podcasting etc. She is a traditional marketing person, but saw the changes that were happening in the media world. Social Media really helps support her work. She talks about working with social media and traditional media.

Fun to talk arts, pr and how we can get sales. Can we? Are people doing more hands on work to find the plays they want to see. Citizen journalism does help the arts… but there are lots of debates on this.

Rebecca says we can now connect with people much faster… it does help events. Powerful to make relationships.

WordPress is talked about. What is her fave plugin- she likes Sexy Bookmarks. Worth checking out.

We have an American in the tent! We welcome Lyn Terry to the 2nd morning of the tent! Lyn tells us why she came to Victoria. She is one of the rare ones who came from the US. Loved her insight on SMCV11, Victoria and her first trip to Canada.

We had a large talk on introverts, extroverts and Affiliate Marketing.

Lyn talks about her 15 yrs in business – talk about mediums change, but how you work stays the same. Loves Twitter and how she is able to engage. Tells about her policy for Facebook.

Lyn gives us the Reader’s Digest version of Affiliate Marketing. She has been doing this for 10 yrs. Uses niche affiliate marketing. Interesting stuff. She sells everything from patio furniture to Tickle Me Elmo. She has a good vision of what is interesting to her – and that helps her with affiliate marketing.

We sidetrack with Lorraine Murphy….

Ok – we’re back in the tent. Cathy! She puts up with us. She is so kind and gracious. She is a connector… that is a given. She used to do a think called the Daily Intro… make connection for many people on Twitter. She is a woman who is a Social Media Matchmaker… maker of communities.

What surprised us is that she has only been in Vancouver for about 2 years. We thought she was a fixture here.

Kim and Cathy get on a jag about publicity… what fun it is to to talk to someone who knows gets it. Cathy talks about the immediacy that social media provides to pr professionals. She is a fountain of information. We get to talking about telephone protocol too… all goes hand in hand.

Cathy talks about her photography. Fantastic images. She is a better photographer than many, many people we have ever seen. She is also legally blind. A bit of vision – but her clarity is profound.

We also talked about being an advocate for those who are ill – Cathy will stand up for what she wants to support. She also sees how Social Media galvanizes for support of each other.

Yelp!!

We have a pre-role chat and it was so good we kept it. Great to have Crystal Hendrickson in the podcast tent. Social Media Camp Victoria 2011 was a great place to connect. We talk about her Tom shoes… Canadian. We also talk about body odour etc. We grossed poor Bob out.

Crystal is manager of YELP North America. She is a going concern! Lots of fun, and again, loves building community. Yelp is about the collective – the place where people give information and get information. Share your own hot spots. Crowd-sourcing rocks.

Crystal is so into bacon that she shared this photo of her own personal gingerbread bacon men.

Cherry coke in a can… and some bacon talk – Crystal even mentions fake bacon. Gasp! Now that’s something to Yelp about.

In the canvas tent! Talking to Theresa Lalonde from CBC. Kim and Theresa talked about a very intense radio show and how it translated to life online and again offline. Here is the story that we were talking about. Be warned, it is touching and will move you to help make some changes.

Chatted about how radio works with their community…. more immediate with the aid of Social Media.

Learned lots about how reporters in the field use different tools… Theresa like Social Media and how she learns from people. It is a great source for getting to know people and have them get to know you.

Social Media does aid Theresa to open up her contact range and find people to talk to. It is interesting to see how many media folks who use it and some who are resistant and how they are being made to use it. Theresa has some great insight on this.

We also talk about Vancouver being one of the largest user of social media… lots of commuting and communications. Goes hand in hand.

Consumer and tech stories are things that Theresa talk about for CBC. The basic thing to be a good reporter is to be the best part of yourself – be interested in other people. Find your own voice…. trickier than it seems. Curiousity is a big thing to be for journalism, blogs etc.

Kim and Bob learned so much from Theresa – we could have had a big tent sleep-over and kept on talking!

Sean Smith from Campbell River!

Talk about his family military history. Kim and Sean met on Twitter on November 11th and it was a treat to FINALLY meet in person. We talk about the value of Remembrance Day and all that we need to honour.

Sean is a huge Campbell River fan. He supports his community and that is exciting to see. He tells everyone why his town is great, shows the fish, the wildlife and more. Community building using the social media community. Lovely combination. He does lots of volunteer work and uses social media to promote his community. We would love for more people to promote their town, city etc!

We get to talking about Hootsuite, Sprout Social and how the analytics work for him. Bob is curious about the options….

Can we agree to disagree on Twitter? Conversations can be started – and opinions heard. We talk a bit about politics and how that works for Sean.

We really enjoyed listening to Sean – he talks more than us! Can you believe that!

Nancy White is talking about her book, she loves talking about how communities form online. Technology stewards. Fascinating, funny woman. Smart to boot!

We loved to talk about connecting and community.

Zack does marketing for European Floors. We loved him! He made us realize how much we have to learn from others and how much others learn from us. Open mindedness rules!

Nancy and Zack were brought together because they were in the vicinity of the tent… kinda like a venus fly trap the podcast tent was! Kim still loves this chat in the tent – she learned so much from both of these two folks.

More tent time at Social Media Camp Victoria 2011! This time we have the pleasure of talking to Jay Baer.

Jay is the co-author of “The Now Revolution: 7 Shifts to Make Your Business Faster, Smarter and More Social.  He also has lots written on him on Wikipedia… you know you are someone when you have a Wikipedia page!

One thing Wikipedia does not have is Jay’s REAL NAME. We are such super sleuths, that we got it out of him. Well, not really, he just told us.

We talked to Jay about his love of Canada… and his desire to move to Vancouver Island. He talks about our great qualities. He made us feel great about where we live!

We talked about Jay’s book – and he talks about the publishing industry. He tells a great story about Kindle and his book.

We talk about marketing, customer service, social media (it is a job now – but needs to be a skill!). Lots of changes have happened in the past – talked about the future and some things that will happen. Exciting times ahead!

The Podcast tent continues! Kim and Bob talk with Hootsuite’s Kemp Edmonds. We learn a lot of stuff about the organisation and how well it is doing from him and we also talk about BACON the ongoing subtopic in the Podcast tent today!

Here is a sad truth about Kim… she sings this song when she does Hootsuite on her computer. Maybe we should ask the gang down at Hootsuite to make us a special sweet-tooth application to make it even more useful for poor Kim and her sugar needs.

Kemp, is based in Vancouver. Has taught Social Media at BCIT, now works with Hootsuite and is just a great guy. It was a treat for us to chat with him. Learn about all the things Hootsuite brings to the users. Learn more about the free-mium model that Hootsuite recently adopted. One of the great benefits of Hootsuite is that it grows with you and your needs.

We also appreciate Kemp’s wry sense of humour and his work ethic. Nice that those go hand in hand. We admire that in a person.

Bacon is certainly the theme in the tent this day. It makes people happy. Interesting how strips of pig will do that to a person.

Some of us cannot eat bacon… Doctor’s orders. But, we can wear it.

Hot times in the tent at SMCV11.

In the hot seats are Valerie Lamirande aka @haidasoapgirl and Ronnice Krug aka @Caribbeancabana. Both ladies made the road trip from the Comox Valley to come to the conference.

We creep Bob out talking about peri-menopause. Just love doing that to Bob.

Valerie (on the right) is Kim’s official soap supplier. We get the back story of Valerie’s soaps. Haida Gwaii stories through soap. History, depth and more in a hygiene project. Beautiful items to see and to smell. Too bad there is no smell for this podcast. Valerie tells us more about her soaps…. oil and water and making it mix.

Ronnice (on the left)  talks about Caribbean food – her partner Wain, is a chef/owner of Caribbean Cabana. Amazing food, Wain is gorgeous and they work hard to engage locally and across the Island with their Social Media needs.

We talk JERK. The food, not the creeps. Road trip worthy jerk in Courtney.

Go do the fossil tour in Courtney – then go try the restaurant. A great day to be had.

Social Media Camp Victoria 2011 was super fun. Bob and Kim learn some great things from a variety of people at the conference. These people will now forever be know as Social Media Campers.

The reason for campers? Well, Bob and Kim thought they should put the CAMP in Social Media Camp, so they gathered a tent, a tree, marshmallows, toilet paper, wood, podcast equipment and tea, and created the Podcast Tent.

It was a very popular spot and we had the chance to connect with multitudes of interesting folks. It was a treat for us! This is the first of many podcasts we did on the first weekend of June.

We were also delighted we were placed near the washrooms and the green room. This meant we had ready access to tea at all times. Tea is happiness in a cup, did you know that? As we drank so much tea, the location of the washroom was ideal for us. The green room was so close, but we needed to know why it was called a “green room”. Our first guest is Laura Barnes. She owns two Serious Coffee locations on Vancouver Island. http://www.seriouscoffee.com/. They do coffee, tea and Kim’s favourite, French Sodas. Laura tells us how they engage with customers for all 26 Serious Coffee locations on Vancouver Island. Their “Tall, Dark and Have Some” campaign rocked Facebook and Twitter. She loved how the public got involved. We learn more about the company and all that they do. Laura talks about how she became the Social Media person for the company.

Bricks and mortar companies can use social media in great ways. Laura Barnes is someone to learn from. We were lucky to have connected with her. We loved it and eager to hear more from her!

Here is Kim’s home kettle corn machine.

Kim provides her popcorn recipe:

• 1/2 c. popcorn
• 1/4 c. sugar
• 2 tbsp. coconut oil

Melt shortening in a 1 quart saucepan on high then add the popcorn. When popcorn starts popping put sugar in and place lid on. Shake it to mix sugar. Keep shaking to keep from burning.

Kim is working with a solo-preneur at the end of the month – doing a strategy session. It’s not for the big guys anymore – utilize it. Social media marketing can help too.

Survey Monkey is a great way get more feedback on your business too… but it is key to figure out questions etc. One survey does not do it all… whittle it down to very finite questions to how they perceive you.

Sometimes strategic alliances can come from getting out there and socialize… opportunities can come… good ones! Networking is a great thing and we hope you get out at least once a month.

How do strategic alliances work… how do they happen, how can they all win. It’s kind of like match-making. Some are short term and some are long term. You go in with your needs and away you go!

We talked about comedy, Seth Rogen and all the people who believed in him. We talk about comedy shows at coffee houses, restaurants, bars etc.

We talk about our other strategic alliances – how we work with them. The good and the bad. Mostly good. It’s a give/give situation when you start the relationship.

Where do ideas come from – and how can you find your internal content. Ideas are around you – and what will work, makes sense and work in your budget.

We encourage one and all to ask for help – but trust your instinct.

Tip that we really want you to get… what is the win for the audience. That is one of the keys when it comes to marketing, social media, marketing etc.

Leveraged content is a great idea and one that we want you to plan for. It would be great if you can use your idea for many platforms – blogs, trade shows, social media, PR etc. We also talk about timing for implementation of your ideas. You need to plan ahead – and think for the future.

Sometimes strategy and negotiation goes hand in hand. We have some ideas and ways to get more for your buck.

We also chat about trade shows etc that need a fresh perspective and sometimes a great idea from you may be just what they need. Be a help for them and you will likely get more. Help them find fresh voices.

Included here is a picture of www.thebookbroads.com and our event where we got a standing ovation – a testament to what the organizer knew her group was hungry for. Fun, informative and for the people.

Printing, newsletters and more – what does your audience need and will learn to trust you and your business. It is all relationship building… giving and making it fun and interesting. What will keep your voice in the forefront for your clients – or potential clients.

Find good people to help you with things you are unable to get… Kim hires out financial stuff, and cannot not do her own PR. Outside sources can be a big benefit and help you move forward. Bob has a good story about how he had an epiphany about his business and how he kicked himself in the pants.

Bob talks about prosumers too… interesting mash-up word, but talking about many of us out there who like the bright, shiny stuff. Try to pull back from buying things… and think about content and how that will work for you.

Kim leaves the podcast with some homework for you… hope you do it. Open your eyes and check out the world and it will help with your ideas, content and ways to increase your profile.

This week we continue our talk about starting a business. More about marketing and publicity. Bob asks Kim some questions. Kim asks Bob some questions.

Where do you place you ad dollars? How do you figure out your market and find the appropriate place to put your ads. Think about negotiations, graphics, editorial content and more.

Brand perception is another topic of the day. What can you do work with a graphics designer and content creator. Bob also talks about to make your life easier when it comes to working on logos, websites and more. The reverse branding – and it works! Discovery sessions are great beginnings for all businesses…. I want one… hint, hint, Bob. It really clarifies who you are and what your business is. Bob also says that we have to get over our logo to move on and get your website and content going.

We talk about network meetings, a bit about social media… what is best for you? What is targeted networking? Is it wise to give free advice at these events? What’s in it for you?

Who can use publicity. What tools do you need to get started. Kim (that’s me) gives 5 tips… marketing timeline, a timeline for your PR content, switch your focus to your audience and not about you, you HAVE to have a website, please include a media page, photos – head shots and editorial, a bio (to blow your horn). How do you deal with the media… what works for them, what are their needs? You can do PR on your own – but ensure you are PROFESSIONAL. Make sure your press release is a solution provider for media.  How will the media connect with you, your product, your service.

Media coaching is a key for clients if you are doing PR. Get an understanding of what you are going to say during your interviews. What are your main point, what you need to get across. Messaging is key. The goal when you do an interview is to build your credibility…. more comes from that.
